Keto versus Plant-based diets for health

Both Keto and Plant-based diets can promote better health assuming one chooses healthy foods. Let’s compare some basics for each.

Ketogenic diets help to reduce blood sugar and insulin, which can be a common root cause for many illnesses such as insulin resistance, diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. Keto diets can also help people to lose weight by training their body to adapt to burning fat reserves for fuel. When the blood sugar is high and thus insulin hormone present in the bloodstream, the body is in fat-storing mode. The body will switch to fat-burning when carbohydrate or glucose is not readily available for the energy metabolism. Both fasting and keto diets can reduce blood sugar enough to help the body switch to burning fat instead of carbohydrates for energy.

Plant-based diets can reduce inflammation and improve uptake of nutrients by being nutrient-dense as compared with calorie dense foods. Plant-based foods that are whole foods (not processed) also help create satiety with fewer calories. This can also promote better weight management.
